What You Need to Know About Credit Card Debt Management Services

Because of credit card debt, management services have sprung up everywhere.  This has created a problem for many consumers. The fact that some of these companies are nothing more than con artists can complicate the financial problems you may already face.  There are certain things, which you can do to protect yourself should you be in need of the programs offered by these companies.  By educating yourself on consumer rights you can protect yourself from the scam artists and organizations, which claim to be non-profit but are not.

You will first want to shop around.  On the Internet you can find literally thousands of these companies offering to help manage your debt.  By researching each one with the Better Business Bureau (BBB) you can eliminate many of them.  Because they have not been reported to the BBB does not mean the company is credible.  Likewise, because they are registered with the BBB does not make them safe, either.  To determine if the company is legitimate you will need to speak with a representative from the agency and ask some questions concerning their credit card debt management services.

Debt relief plans, as some agencies refer to them, can sometimes put you in greater debt than when you started.  The program is designed to negotiate a deal with your creditors to eliminate your debt by scheduling a reduced payment plan.  The interest is either lowered or even eliminated.  The management services collect the money from you, usually as a direct withdrawal from your paycheck, and send this money to your creditors, thus reducing your debt over a period of time.  Many consumers have been caught in scams where the agency handling their debt relief did not even make the payments as scheduled.  The creditor refused to honor the negotiated terms and the result was the consumer had to file bankruptcy.  You do not have to take this risk.

Make sure the credit card or debt management services you choose offers a written contract.  Everything discussed or offered verbally should be in the contract.  The contract should provide the terms and conditions as well as any fees.  There should also be a set time frame to accomplish the goals you and your counselor have set.

The services should also include counseling to better understand your budget.  The education you get from this dealing with a consumer credit agency should prepare you to make wise financial decisions.  You should learn what caused the problem and how to avoid it happening in the future.

You should avoid companies that ask for fees up front.  Your money should be paying off your creditors, not the management service's costs.  Always ask that any information you do not understand be clearly explained.  If you still are not satisfied with the answers, do not hesitate to walk out and find another company.

When you are in need of credit card or debt management services, the last thing you want is to find a company, which could cause you to file bankruptcy.  You are trying to salvage your credit, not ruin it.
